Daie snapped awake, and was out of bed in an instant, and dressed. He opened the window, and looked out just as the sun rose. He watched the sunrise, then bounded out of the house, and into the street. Few people were up at this time, only a few traders setting up their stalls along the usually busy main street. He nodded hello to a few familiar faces, and looked down the road. It wove its way from tree to tree for the elven city of Suldnessalar was housed in hundreds of trees. He heard the bell, summoning all elves to the temple of Rillifane for the morning service, and quickly ducked out of sight. All elves were supposed to attend, and skipping chapel received harsh punishments, but today was a special day. His hundred and eleventh birthday. From dawn today, he was an elvish adult. He would be expected in chapel to receive a blessing from the high priestess. But he had a prior engagement.
He swung over the edge of the road, and dropped from branch to branch, until hr reached the ground.
“Impressive entrance”
Daie turned around, and smiled.
“Are you ready?”
“Yeah. I said goodbye to my mother yesterday. She’ll tell father when I’m a safe distance away.”
“How far is a safe distance?”
Daie shifted uncomfortably “Evereska?.”
The woman laughed. “I can only take you as far as Saradush. There is a mercenary camp there. I’m sure a young elf with your skills can find work.”
Daie smiled uneasily “I’m not sure I’m comfortable with the idea of killing for money.”
“Become an adventurer then, it’s all the same. Now come on we must leave.”
Daie turned and followed her down the track, sneaking a last look over his shoulder at the place he used to call home.
